Studied a business course. Material was ok but most classmates barely spoke English. We were supposed to work on a group plan. As there were only two of us that had good enough English to complete the assignment and actually understand what was required of us, the work that should have been shared by six people was done by two of us. We felt overburden, we felt that we did not learn what we came to learn and we ended up doing “chores” that UVIC as a school should have done not us. This was not the fault of the students who did not speak the language but strictly the fault of UVIC. I immigrated 30 years ago to Canada and I would have loved to do a community course that could also give me some credits. I remember being rejected because my English was not strong at the time. That was Great! As an ESL student at the time, I did not limit my classmates due to my lack of understanding. Why is UVIC charging money to teach a course to people who barely understand what is being taught? Why are you only concerned which getting your tuition fares paid and not if all the students who came to learn and are paying to do that are actually getting their learning instead of becoming TA’s for those who are clueless in the classroom.? And why are the rest of us made to learn in a substandard way where we are put in a position to teach English, Edit work from others and not have projects properly done as two people can not and should not be responsible for translating what is being taught. UVIC please have a minimal standard of English before you open your doors to all who apply. While this is a community course you also need to be caring of the outcomes and not just your sales to who ever pays for your courses. You don’t have to have a high level of English but at least make sure you ensure people will be functional within what is required in the classroom and it’s assigments.
