I received a 1carat diamond solitaire engagement ring last weekend that was purchased at Griffin Jewellers. Because it was appraised at 10,000.00 by this appraiser, I was reluctant to send it away to be sized down without having it insured first. I decided to take it to my local jeweller who has been a very well known goldsmith for decades to have it sized. As is his standard routine goes, he examined the stone before taking possession of the ring. He easily noticed a huge feather inclusion in the diamond. My fiancé bought it after being told that it was 70% off the retail value and came with the Gem Scope appraisal stating it as 10,000.00. He paid 4,300.00 thinking it was good value based on the appraisal amount. My jeweller today informed us that the ring is worth about what my fiance paid and is no where close to the 10,000.00 appraisal. The jewelry store will not take the ring back to exchange for another they have in a store in Burlington because apparently \Layaway items are considered final sale\. Now if i have the ring insured as is, I will be paying over 2 times the insurance premium because it will be based upon this appraisal. Im not impressed at all. The store clerk said i could have it sent back to Gem Scope to be reappraisd at a cost of 50.00 I shouldn't have to pay anything to have it reappraised, nor do I wish to have it sent anywhere uninsured. Sour note for what should be a happy occasion. Im stuck with an overvalued ring with a fracture in it and nothing I can do about it.
Saw a appraisal online and searched the name of the appraiser called A.Deedee Hovnanian. Apparently, she appraised the ring for 15k(excluding tax). Went on James Allen and got the exact one for 5014, custom made with same cut, clarity, and colour. Such a scam. The person was putting it up for 7.5k. I could've lost thousands of dollars. I have a feeling people who sell the rings pay extra to get the appraisal price higher.

My insurance company had no issues with the appraisal and I can feel protected knowing I took the time to use this service. My appraisal came back a little more than expected but as an investment im fine with that.
