Best sushi in town, easily. Tried the bulgogi, though...was not impressed. But I can't stress enough how good the sushi itself is.

Best sushi I've ever had in my life. I always try different sushi places in every city I visit, and I still haven't found a place that even compares in quality. They are a bit expensive, but that's easily because of the product and consistent level of professionalism they bring. If you're ever in Sudbury, GO HERE!
Used to love this restaurant but the service has greatly declined since my last visit a year ago. Ordered take out, was told 30 min for a wait time; arrived and was waiting for another twenty minutes before the order was ready. As others have mentioned, the rolls were falling apart and squashed. I don't often leave ratings, much less negative ones, but I am disappointed this time. I hope they use the customer feedback available here to address some of the issues.
Hit and miss going here. The one and only place I've almost gotten sick from sushi was here about a year ago. I find service can be terribly slow when there is only 1 waitress and she has 3 or less than tables. Used to be delicious about 5 years ago but the quality is usually a miss here.
This was our favourite sushi place in town. Went there tonight for dinner and it was horrible. Our server couldn't understand us and brought out the wrong food, then tried to get him to take it back and he just shrugged us off and said that's what we ordered. I always get the same 2 rolls, and the quality of them was horrible didn't even want to eat them. Will not be going back. I've heard similar stories that it has changed for the worse in the last while.
Over priced for the quality. They drown their rolls in sauce and the sashimi varies in size greatly. Sapporo is a more authentic experience in my opinion.
I am having a hard time trying to find anything positive about my recent experience at Umai. 1) Our hostess, while I am positive she might have been over worked (as there was a help wanted sign up), was curt, dismissive, and borderline sarcastic. I shrugged it off. 2) We were seated next to the only other patrons in the establishment, who left shortly after our arrival. The table across from us was dirty and covered in dishes and old food, and it never changed. 3) Our food came, we shared a sushi/roll plate, and a tempura appetizer, and both were less than appetizing. The rolls were poorly put together, oversized, and fell to pieces. The tempura shrimp within the roll was old and rubbery (even the tempura coating), all of the veggies within the rolls (the cucumber particularly) was not fresh, rubbery from dehydration, and wilted. 4) My partner's glass was dirty with someone's lipstick (there was a funny moment where he looked all confused and asked me if I had been drinking from his glass... I had not). I really wanted to enjoy the experience, and to be honest, I think this is the first time I have given a poor review, so understand that I am not just nit picking. For what the evening cost, I find myself very unsatisfied with the experience. Take from this what you will.
So this was previously my favourite place to eat, sushi wise. However, the original owners moved away and sold the business to someone local who has completely dropped the ball. The food has dropped significantly in quality. What once was an excellent presentation has turned into basically slop on your plate. Rolls are smaller and not as neatly put together, service is slow, and mistakes are made way more than they should be. Overall I would have to say I would NOT recommend Umai any longer. It's a real shame - it used to be one of the best places in the city.
