Suprising and rare public art, because is made of wood not only most environmental or with unique personality material but also despite efforts of preventive measures is very prone to erosive forces of outdoor elements. What unfortunately happened to this sculpture in the past, had to be re-carved and moved to the current place. The Veteran is located in the northeast part of Gage Park, near arche entrance on Main and Wellington. Statue presenting Bill Bettridge, a decorated Veteran of World War II and was carved from the trunk of a dead red oak tree that was growing in this park for over hundred years. Sculptor Jim Menken is known locally and internationally for bringing new life to dying trees by transforming them with chainsaw into beautiful works of art. You will maybe find Interesting that custom of knocking on wood, superstitious tradition, came from acient pagan cultures, where they believed that supernatural beings are living in trees, and can be call on for protection. Different variations and they meanings of this custom are still practiced around the world. Let me say... touch a wood that this sculpture will stay erected for many years to come, for enjoyment and appreciation. Lovely Gage Park for you to enjoy and many beautiful things to see few steps away. Worth the effort. Yours to discover.
