San Josef Bay, Canada
Cape Scott Park Rd

Good for kids
We stayed for a night here and had a good evening. The campsite is basic; and the toilet could do with some attention; but the space, the very friendly and welcoming host and the proximity to San Josef Bay is great. No way to book; but wouldn't be concerned about turning up and talking to the owner to get a spot. Price is 10 a night per person, to be paid in cash on arrival. When driving to the bay, ignore the first sign for the San Josef campsite - this is a Western Forest Products campsite, which though free had poor facilities and a very damp, dark feel. The second sign for the Heritage campsite and boat launch will take you to this campsite.

Excellent host. Friendly and knowledgeable man, a true lover of Mother Nature. Quiet, well spaced and clean campsites. There is one outhouse, serves the purpose. If I ever get the chance, I’ll be back.
Charming, authentic experience. The forest is alive, here.
Great spot, very quiet peaceful, lots of wildlife, firepit, tables and a short cut to the san Josef trail. Great if you dont want to hike with camping gear!! Around 40 min walk to San Josef Bay. Very nice guy called Doug onsite. Directions - Turn off before Port Hardy. Head for Holberg then follow the Cape Scott/San Josef signs. Dont follow sat nav, it can take you down some never ending roads to nowhere. The road just after the turn off at Port Hardy is gravel logging road all the way to Cape Scott, quite possible easier in a suv. If it turns into a road that looks like a trail, you've gone wrong. (See Pics). The sign to the campsite is small, and below a"Boat Acess" sign. We didnt reserve or pre book a space, we just showed up.
Site is close to the trailhead. Simple friendly host. Little upkeep to camping areas or facilities. Sketchy outhouse. Swamp like surroundings and many bugs. Departed with 50 bug bites some of which became open sores.
A very nice quiet place, a friendly host with a lot of local knowledge. The only thing: it would be nice to have a shower cabin. Not a running shower but just a cabin where you can bring your bucket with water or hang a camp shower and close the door. Near the river, mosquitoes can be bad so don't forget your spray! In high waters, you can canoe/kayak right to the St.Josef bay and land nicely before waves if you don't like rough waters.
We had an amazing time at the San Josef Heritage Campsite. Doug, our host, was very gracious, funny, and we felt like we made a genuine connection with him while we were there for 5 nights at the end of August 2018. It is so close to the beginning of all the Cape Scott trails, it's a great jumping off place for day hikes. We also really enjoyed just staying at our campsite & watching all the various people that Doug interacted with every day. We met 3 Hobie kayak fisherman who stayed at a site just down from us. They were very friendly & shared some fresh ling cod, which was a super treat! We would come back & stay with Doug again, for sure.
My wife and I stayed at Heritage Campsite in Sept 2017. Doug runs the place and is a delightful old fellow. I forgot my rain gear and Doug loaned me his own so we could hike out to the bay. We had planned on just camping in the parking lot of the park but upon our arrival we found all the signs forbidding camping. We drove back to heritage (300') to check it out. It looked empty but a cabin had a stove going and out came Doug. While we chatting I discovered that his reservation system was an old tape answering machine at his other house 60 miles away.... " but I check it every couple of weeks". I couldn't contain my laughter any longer only to be told that " I think it needs a new tape because I can barely hear what people are saying. LOL. It turns out that lots of people do camp in the parking lot but there are warnings about leaving valuables in cars etc. If you would like a little more security for your vehicle I would highly recommend staying at Doug's. We have a camper van So we were self contained and did not use any facilities but I believe there is a washroom and shower. He has room for big trailers, motorhomes and tents. I don't know if it's possible to make a reservation but I am pretty certain you can get a spot any time.
