Ive walked and cycled the Shell Road trail from Cambie Road all the way to Steveston Highway. Between Cambie Road and Alder bridge on has to go from the west sidewalk to the east sidewalk and back to the west sidewalk to be able to successfully navigate it without walking in traffic or near the rails. After Alderbridge, still heading south, the East side of the road has a paved trail along which one can cycle, skate, walk or run. On this part of the trail one has to keep the doggies on leash. Once one gets past Westminster Highway, the trail is gravel and it is leash-optional. It continues like this to approximately 200 meters past Francis Road, where it, once again, turns into a nicely paved trail all the way to Steveston Hwy. Past Steveston, one must use the sidewalk if walking or the road if cycling. Keep in mind there are two crossings to deal with, Granville and Blundell. At these crossings, most drivers fly by, (speed limit is 30 as the trail runs right beside the railway)not really respecting the speed limit on the road so I recommend one leashes their pets for the crossing. The trail itself is nice. It is relatively peaceful and one can see many type of birds. From the Eagles and Hawks that frequent the fields just beyond the trail to woodpeckers, wrens and many other locals. It can be slightly treacherous in winter after snowing and a few cold days as not much sun actually hits the trail itself since it is lined with trees and high shrubs on both sides. In my experience on this trail, most cyclists are nice and actually slow down or at the very least ring their bell to let you know they're approaching; still take care early mornings and late evenings. Walking from Cambie to Steveston takes around 20,000 steps and the trail is flat with the exception of walking up to the crossings. Beyond Steveston Hwy, one can connect to Beaver Slough and cycle or walk all the way to South Dyke Road.

Love this trail. Easy, nice forested oasis in the middle of Richmond. Be careful crossing the 2 streets that intersect the trail. Cars have a habit of exceeding the 50km's speed limit by a far margin across the clearly indicated crosswalks.. Carry a light at night. Otherwise, a great place to walk, run or cycle.
