Gordon The reason we like to give estimates at R. Muth and Sons is exactly so our customers can make the decision to repair or not. We do this at our customer's request. This protocol is clearly and kindly expressed at the moment the machine in need of repair is dropped off .This is really a diagnostic fee, automotive repair businesses have been doing this for a long time now. The 30 dollars is simply a minimum charge in our business which includes examining and/or dismantling the machine and writing up a diagnostic report for the customer (this does take time). This 30 dollars is not added on to the cost of repair if our customers do decide to go ahead and repair the machine. If ever there is a complaint I am always available for a friendly resolution.

I had an issue with my Lawn mower (start stop) so I took it to R Muth and they wanted 185 for a tune up !! Then they wanted 30 just for them to tell me they mower needed a tune up. I laughed at them ,didn't pay and took my mower and checked out You tube and was able to find some great info on lawn mower maintenance. As it turned out I was able to get the mower working for the price of some oil and a spark plug. The rest was my labour. Don't Take Anything to R Muth, they will just steal your money !!
I've been here 3 times with mower issues. Always some combination of something they cannot fix, or just recommend a new mower, but always accompanied with some level of arrogance and\\or rudeness. One day, someone will have the smarts to open a small engine shop and have better customer relations...I've never walked away happy, and I won't be back.
We bought a Stihl weed trimmer here last summer, it stopped working in the fall we brought it in to be looked at this spring, the unit was not getting any gas and would not start. Estimate was 200 as everything had to be "rebuilt" the result of us using "bad gas" strange as we bought premix gas for the unit from their same store. We were charged 30 for the estimate and got the unit back disassembled with a bag of parts, we did not authorize the repair. The one year warranty had dropped to 60 days ?!? We went to another Stihl dealer 20 minutes away, put the unit back together replacing the latex gas priming nipple you press to prime the unit with gas at a cost of 4.00. We have run 2 tanks through the unit and it starts first pull every time. We consider the 30 well spent we learned a lesson here.
