During the past two summers, I have visited the Lower Selma Museum five times, enjoying the progress made during renovations and receiving A-I tours from the well trained , knowledgeable summer staff who took pride in their work and sharing information and stories pertaining to the artifacts. I enjoy the museum's Facebook page and marvel at the great amount of work that has been accomplished- cemeteries, renovations to the museum building, the exhibits and records. Beautiful setting, too. Kudos to the board, staff and volunteers!!! Well done!! The walls are striking( There's a story there and the guides are excellent story tellers..)

I first became aware of the Lr. Selma Museum when I saw a documentary film at the Atlantic Film Festival a few years ago. I think it was called East Hants This is us or something like that. Finally this summer I got to make two visits. It is an impressive little museum housed in an old church in a beautiful setting. I had seen the excellent videos on the 84th Regiment on Facebook and as I am descended from at least 4 of the members I was very interested in exploring their resources. With the help of Jenna MacPhee, the museum summer employee whose ancestors we share I was able to flesh out my genealogies. She has a keen interest in the MacPhee family history and could quickly find information in the many resources at the museum. Also it is a beautiful drive from Windsor whether you follow the coastline or go through the beautiful countryside around Kennetcook.

If you are a resident of East Hants, or \from away\ with an interest in the history of East Hants, the museum in Lower Selma is a must see. The members of the East Hants Historical Society have accumulated an amazing collection of artifacts collected over years of donations from residents and others. Each artifact has a story of its own. Along with the artifacts are many archival documents related to community histories and genealogies! A wonderful place!

My visit to the Lower Selma Museum My visit to the historic museum in Lower Selma on September 11th, 2020, was a “Wow” and “What if?” experience for me. I stopped in front of the uniform of the 84th Regiment of Foot “Wow”! That’s what my ancestor George Miller would have worn when he was brought to Nova Scotia with the regiment. But, “What if?” he hadn’t decided to join the British after being captured and had chosen death instead? I stopped in front of an organ saved from a fire onboard a ship. “Wow”, imagine a captain’s wife living onboard the ship with her husband. How precious that organ must have been. But, “What if?” my ancestor Sam Spares hadn’t been one of the two people surviving a wreck off the coast of New Zealand? What if he hadn’t met and married a descendent of George Miller? What if they hadn’t settled in Nova Scotia? I stopped in front of a series of genealogy information journals collected by Helen Whidden. I found information on an Aunt, Reta Murphy. Wow! What if her ancestors had stayed in Ireland instead of coming to Nova Scotia? What if my father, Sam Spares and my Mother, Mabel Murphy had not met and married? Would I have still existed as another person? A visit to the museum leaves me wanting to go back and see what other “Wows” await. Eva Mae (Spares) Gray
