Awesome views, rugged trail. 500m above Alder Flat has a viewpoint. Just 15 km round trip, great for a day hike

We hiked Golden Ears trail to the summit of Golden Ears on August 18, 2018 and on August 3, 2019 with kids. The return distance is 24 km, elevation gain is 1600 m, cumulative elevation gain is 1800 m. The turnaround time is 10-13 hours depending on the fitness level and trail conditions. It is usually done as an overnight hike with camping sites at Alder Flats or in the alpine near emergency shelter. The trail starts out as West Canyon trail which forks into Golden Ears trail and Lower Falls trail at around 4 km distance. Up to the Alder Flats (5.5-6 km), the trail is an easy walk in a park with only 200-300 m elevation gain. Past Alder Flat the trail becomes steeper first following dry creek and then turning into a steep forest leading to Panorama Ridge. The forest section of the trail is extremely steep, rugged and scrambly and may slow down hiking pace significantly in wet and slippery conditions. There is a marked trail leading all the way to the summit, but beyond the emergency shelter the trail becomes more technical, and requires scrambling skills and experience and markers may be hard to spot.

Great fun! Went with Cadets to Alder Flats overnight in poring rain.. Got Soaked! Even witnessed a VERY SMALL, but safe flash flood in the creek we set up next to! Technical trail from the 3 km mark onwards. Great campsite! Quiet. 100% Recommended
