this place was probably a lot better before occupancy changed to over 2x as many people due to high need. all rooms are shared and residents are mostly great in my experience, but some are not fit to share living space. if you do not handle chaos well, this is a bad place for you for sure. there is no way to cook your own meals here, and food access is very restricted. perhaps if you like hostels, you will like it somewhat? it is not great for most people.

The staff have been very helpful, but the place is scary, dangerous and dirty. Its not a safe place to stay for long. There is nightly chaos by some of the residents.
I have had the opportunity to live at the shelter and at the new residential houses for woman.. When I first went to the shelter I was scared to death, but the staff was so kind and helpful.. The have a WONDERFUL WOMEN who does the cooking she makes sure we ALL ate VERY well.. And the have this WONDERFUL WOMAN who does housekeeping she has been there for years... The other thing is I was struggling addicts and they have addiction concelers there.. My stay at the shelter and the residential home was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL...If anyone out there that needs help, or a warm bed and BEAUTIFUL Staff to talk to PLEASE pick up the phone and go there... I want to wish all the staff at O'Connor st. And Booth at a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS....YOURS TRULY TRACI....
Called there this evening to ask some questions about moving into the shelter. Loved hearing the staff laughing about my questions in the background. When I asked her why she was laughing, she sounded embarrassed but said she found my question \amusing\ Glad women having to move into a shelter is a joke to the staff. My tragedy amusing someone at least!!! Guess I will look elsewhere. Certainly do not want to be the butt of the shelter's staff joke mill.
I really liked Cornerstore, personally. It was one of the better ones I've stayed at, for several reasons; and I think all shelters should adopt a policy like this one: a) There's a communal fridge where everybody keeps their food with their name on it. Nobody touches anyone else's food. b) People can stay for as long as they want. Nobody gets kicked out after six months. c) Women take turns cooking, but if no one does, then workers are available to do it. d) They teach us practical skills every weekend, like how to cook and how to sew. e) There are two beds to a room, and a couple of lockers to put your things in. Every room has two keys, and only YOU and staff get the keys. f) You're expected to clean your own room, and the bathroom. If you don't, then you get kicked out. g) Most importantly, THEY DON'T KICK YOU OUT DURING THE DAY. You can stay in your room all day long if you want to.
