We had a great time learning how to throw clay in a private class. We were all beginners and Lucas was patient and super helpful! We made a bunch of fun attempts at pots. So much fun! Highly recommend!

My husband and I took a private class. A solid introduction to the technical aspects of pottery, a chance to immerse ourselves in a world we previously knew next to nothing about, and a deeper appreciation for the art and magic involved. We got plenty of time to really get our hands dirty. Lukus is a skilled ceramicist and a patient instructor, and it was very cool to watch him expertly fix our rookie mistakes! Mahmoud, the mastermind behind the studio, was also on hand - we enjoyed meeting him and hearing his stories. I enthusiastically recommend Atelier Spirale!

I've been a return student for almost 4 years now! The class is a great environment to learn how to throw pieces on a pottery wheel, or to hand build pieces and to learn to glaze. If you have the time, you can help out and learn how to load the electric kilns. The Teacher is great. He always has interesting stories to share, and goes into a lot of detail when explaining how to make pieces, but not so much to be confusing or overwhelming. He also encourages experimentation, and you can make practically anything you have the skills to make. If you know you'll miss a class, there's a system set up to switch classes with other students so you don't miss any time at the wheel. I highly recommend taking classes at Atelier Spirale!

An award-winning ceramicist, Mahmoud Baghaiean offers courses to all levels of learners at his studio in the Mile End. I've been taking courses here for about two years, and can't recommend it enough to anyone who has ever wanted to learn pottery. Beginners who have never touched a ball of clay need not worry: Mahmoud will teach you the rudimentary steps of homogenizing and centering the clay with humour and patience. Intermediate and advanced students can look forward to discussing more subtle aspects of design and technique with Mahmoud, who always has helpful pointers no matter what you are working on. The last two weeks of the course are especially fun, when students can drop in on any day of the week to glaze their pots. It is a fun, collaborative environment where students can exchange ideas and admire each other's work. All in all, this is a wonderful place to learn a rewarding and meditative hobby. There is nothing quite like eating soup from a bowl you have made yourself. Plus, the pieces make great gifts!
