I cannot speak for the practices of the guild itself but I can speak as a contract employee. My husband was hired for a job as a photographer and discussed the work over the course of several weeks with his contact. An invoice was drawn up and many confirmation emails. The night before a contract was requested - as it was after business hours, he began writing it but did not complete it before the 7 am call time. When he arrived he was told that work would go to someone else as they “had not received his contract”. He explained the request was made during the night the night before. The contact apologized and offered to pay his stipulated cancellation fee and suggested he should follow up via email. When we did, she said she had spoken with her boss and because there was no contact they did not need to pay him for the two weeks of preps, meetings and his booked time. I find this a little ridiculous from a media guild and will be escalating this treatment via the better business bureau as our emails stating this is not fair business/contract job practices have gone unanswered by this guild - a guild, no less specializing and working on behalf of media.

Lovely new office space. Canadian labor union representing over 5000 media workers.
Strong advocate for workers' and journalists' rights at a time when both are under attack.
