Their recipes aren’t the same as traditional Moroccan dishes, rather gain inspiration from them based on Chef Doug Penfold’s experience while travelling. Take the short rib tagine (55), it’s not heavily spiced so the flavours are somewhat muted and even the steam that escapes from the Le Creuset tagine isn’t overly aromatic. What you’re left with are short ribs that are tender and tastes of beef, and plump chanterelles filled with the cooking liquid. The dish is like a beef stew with more herbs rather than a traditional tagine with the bold colours and flavours that are synonymous with paprika and chili. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a tasty dish, but just seems bland if you’re expecting tagine. Atlas does offer starters that incorporate stronger Middle Eastern flavours. The briouat (15) is like a Moroccan cigar except stuffed with tons of savoury sautéed mushrooms before being wrapped tightly in phyllo pastry. Add a bit of herby harissa sauce and the briouat’s taste completely changes as the earthiness of the fungi mellows. Just be warned, it’s piping hot so try to restrain yourself from biting into the starter immediately. It’ll be difficult as it smells heavenly.

Generally fantastic food... too bad the decor is only so-so. The four of us had a selection of the share plates and split the tangine of goat. The share plates were all pretty excellent. The amlou and pita bread paired really well with the harcha. One of my favourites was the roasted beets with yogurt and a touch of cinnamon. Being more of a meat-eater, we also had the beef kefta. Made in-house so they can cook it slightly pink, they were wonderfully tender and flavourful. If the meal had one let-down it was the tangine of goat. It was a bit overdone with some chewy bits and not as flavourful as I’d expected. We made a point of trying the wines from Morocco and the Canary Islands on the recommendation from our wonderfully friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff. They were both excellent. The restaurant also has a good beer selection from a craft brewery in Quebec (big fan, but maybe featuring our excellent local Toronto craft brewery scene would be in order) Other than the chewy goat, the only other item worth mentioning on the downside was the somewhat uninspired interior... fresh and nicely done, it had a pretty generic feel.

I really enjoyed and loved my dinner there ! Way better to order some appetizers/entrees to share at the table. It was very good and you really have a nice choice. The tajine was okay but i wasn't blown away. The desserts were really good if you still have some room. The restaurant is little, but it is cozy and very Mediterranean. Service was good. It is a little expansive but you won't regret it.

I have had many meals at Atlas! It was everything we needed and wish I can eat their food every week. I had just learnt Atlas will be moving so we will make sure we pay a couple more visits. Love the lamb tagine!

The food is good. The Briouat is a definite must as is the eggplant. We had the Chicken Tagine, it was delicious and ample food. The lady who greeted us could have been a tad nicer. We arrived 30 minutes early, offered to sit at the bar even, and we got the vibe she wanted to turn is away unless we agreed that we might be moved mid-meal. We agreed anyways, but the restaurant was half empty by 730pm on a Friday and no one ever arrived to sit at the bar.
