I had an absolutely terrible experience at the Papery. Upon entering, I was told to put my purse and shopping bag on the counter situated immediately upon entering the store. For obvious reasons, I was not comfortable leaving valuables within reach of pedestrians and shoppers while perusing the sizable store. In order to protect the safety of my purse and in an attempt to compromise, I asked if they could hold my purse and shopping bag behind the desk - a simple, safer solution. The young employee consulted the older manager or owner next to her and the older worker loudly and aggressively denied us. She directed a firm response to us in a way that was cold and humiliating in front of the rest of the store, which was as busy as could be mid-pandemic. This was clearly not a Covid protocol, as leaving my personal belongings on a high contact surface would spread germs to both my belongings, the staff who work around it and the customers who come in contact with it. It was also noteworthy that, despite the many customers perusing the store, not a single belonging was on the counter. There is no justification for requiring that one’s belongings be placed on display and within reach of strangers in order to shop in a paper store. And no reason I should have been treated as rudely as I was for attempting to compromise and keep my belongings somewhat safe. I couldn’t help but wonder whether I was profiled. This happened in September and has stayed with me. It was my first day in Ottawa and I sincerely hope that no one else shares the same humiliating experience at this store or elsewhere.

Great location on Bank. Local business with some very helpful staff. The price are a bit high, but the quality is there.
Called to ask about an item that may or may not have been in stock. When it wasn't, the staff asked for my information so they could call me with an update once a shipment came it. To my delight, the item came in and was immediately set aside for me. It was a really lovely and warm interaction. Picking it up in person was also swell if you like stationary and decorations (I really do). Really had a nice experience here, and will shop again.
Support local if you can during lockdown times! Treated myself to a fountain pen and some ink from The Papery and it was packaged with utmost care and delivered quickly to my home. Would recommend their fast and friendly service! The times in the past that I have been able to venture to the store in person and converse with the sales people has been delightful. They are very knowledgeable and happy to help :)
