When we began looking for a Retirement Home in Ottawa, we asked an awful lot of questions because we wanted to get it right. But one question we didn’t ask was “How would you deal with a Global Pandemic?” We chose the Chartwell Rockcliffe Retirement Residence because the administration was top notch, the nursing staff and service staff were caring and worked hard to meet our needs, but we also felt a sense of community here and strongly felt that we belonged. The Residents were friendly, dining was a social occasion with lots of talking going on. We could eat at our chosen time with whomever we wanted, so we met lots of interesting people in a very short time. They also provided lots of intellectual, cultural and physical activities, plus a lot of special fun stuff. Things changed a lot after Covid of course but the features that drew us here prevailed and were instrumental in managing this crisis successfully. The communication was excellent as the administration kept us and our families informed with constant updates. The level of caring by staff which we had noticed was maximized as they had to make enormous sacrifices in their personal lives to keep us safe. It hasn’t been easy for anyone but we have been safe and we feel safe. We were always told the truth, good or bad, and because of that we trust those who make the decisions at Chartwell. Finally, our sense of community made us realize that if we chose to break the rules and not wear a mask for example when we went out, then we could be responsible for bringing Covid into our Residence and affecting a lot of wonderful people who are at high risk. Who would want to live with that? So though we didn’t ask the Pandemic question before moving to the Rockcliffe, we absolutely made the right decision.

My parents moved to the Rockcliffe four years ago. They enjoyed and embraced the beautiful setting, wonderful meals, and all the interesting excursions and activities. My father has been on his own now for nine months and the Rockcliffe staff have gone above and beyond to support him during this time. During Covid, the staff remained professional, calm and residents were safe and looked after. Zoom chats were set up by staff in his room so we could visually stay in touch. The excellent nursing staff were available to handle any emergency. The staff at reception were always warm, friendly and answered my numerous questions. I found this re-assuring as I live out of town. A big Thank You to all the staff and to Sean, the Manager at the Rockcliffe during these unprecedented months.

My parents moved into the Rockcliffe in May 2018, thinking they would stay for a short time while their condo was being repaired. They felt at home very quickly and when it was time to return to their condo they decided to stay at the Rockcliffe and sell their condo. My father had dementia and he felt at ease in this new environment and knew that my mother could have peace of mind in this elegant, familial and secure community. Thank goodness that my parents chose the Rockcliffe. It is a lovely building in a beautiful setting, but more important for us (my parents and my siblings) has been the high professional standard, the warmth and kindness of all staff from management to food service, housekeeping, resident entertainment services and nursing! They have gone above and beyond many times to make my parents happy. They have also been extremely effective in managing living well through these difficult covid times.

Newly-widowed and new to Ottawa, my father moved in to the Rockcliffe 7 years ago. It was a stroke of good luck: he was able to participate in a number of the organized activities that suited his interests (external speakers, current events discussions, trivia and similar games etc.), established wonderful friendships, and has always been well supported by staff who have always gone out of their way to be helpful to him (and me) when the occasion arose, no matter how small the request may have seemed. Most importantly the Rockcliffe staff acted decisively in the early days of Covid-19 and were particularly prompt and transparent at replying to questions and concerns.

I just started working here and it is a very welcoming environment! The staff members are so kind. Seems like a great place to live and definitely a great place to work
