It's a joke. I asked for help taking care of my husband and they send in someone 5 minutes a day - and that is a concession because I was having a near nerveous breakdown over the phone. he does not qualify for more because a nurse who never saw him walk or dress himself, noted he was capable of doing so. I cannot watch him 24/7, he is a danger to himself, but because I am family, his care apparently is my responsibility. What about my health and sanity?

The longterm care home where my mother lives often needs casual staff to cover for the regular staff on leave. This past weekend we got an RN from Mississauga Halton LHIN that's registered with CNO . Her name, Grace Martin. The most inept RN I've ever seen. She openly refused to provide basic pericare to my mother despite the fact that my mother just returned from the hospital 4 days earlier. I captured a short film of this nurse giving every excuse in the book for not attending to her needs. I reported her to the College of Nurses of Ontario and attached the video. She can't deny anything.

The LIHN is a complete joke and utterly useless. Being Canadian you’re always believing that there is a social network in place. It is there to catch you when you start to fall or need help as you age or deteriorate in any manner. My mom is in that situation now and she just turned 80. In two years she has gone from being able to drive a vehicle to not being able to operate a phone or change the channels on her TV. This is all because of the rapid progression of her vascular dementia. She has been to the emergency ward 4 times in the last 18 months, fallen twice in the last four months, can’t walk without a walker, having trouble feeding herself too. I could go on in great details with all of her ailments. The LIHN does not validate this as a crisis situation because all of the available resources have not been used yet. Their solution with this is to have someone come in for 15 minutes every night and to take things out of her living area to make it more accessible. That will apparently give her a greater quality of life. They’re also incredibly rude and try to intimidate and bully you when you phone and complain and ask for help. How can someone who was born in Canada, raised a family on one income, and never once required social assistance be denied the needs of life now? These people are corrupt as well as the government. So glad we are robbed by such high taxes with nothing to show when you really need it.

The Mississauga Halton LHIN placement staff who handle the new nursing home applications are incredibly rude, condescending and difficult. They have made the process of applying to a nursing home for my family member an absolute nightmare.

Unless you have money, you or your loved one can expect minimal care. The hospitals want you out so they have more beds and your family is going to be the ones caring for you whether they have the resources or not. Lhin likes to set up \help\ through agencies like Paramed who only show up for an hour if they show up at all and cannot guarantee times. Your family needs to work? Too bad, that's not the Lhin's problem. Screw you for being poor. Is your apartment unsafe and not equipped for an ailing or eldery person? Rearrange everything and disrupt the lives of all involved. Pets? They need to be locked up in case a worker is afraid of them. If you have a complaint about one of the agencies they outsource, they make you call the agency who again refers you to the Lhin. They like to remind you that because you have the audacity to be poor you're lucky to be getting any help at all. Be prepared to wait months at home until they can get you into a proper facility, all while making you and your family figure out the details and pay for the expensive and necessary equipment. The healthcare system in Canada is broken and this agency is a prime example of it.
