Horrible. Very Bad. From several sources.. Myself because I had been in contact with I imagine the male owner(As it was always the same very questionable man that I spoke to in the week before my arrival day) To see availability, give notice when Id be there and what not. Then, when I called him my arrival day and informed him of my time, he agreed.. I even let him know I was an hour away Which was also agreed upon. Calling within the hour saying I'm a couple minutes away and was just checking if they took debit or cash. He said "We're shut" and hangs up on me!!! I try back because of my shock, just for him to ask my name and ask we're I'm from??.. and after answering him he just say "Apologies I'm hanging up on you" *click* again!!!! Worst customer service I've ever experienced, comparable to sitting at a restaurant table and no server coming to your table.. Good friend I met during my travels said he stayed there just to listen to the owner scream in the basement for hours at someone. He also, was not happy. (Update 2018) Due to the owners response 2 years after I dealt with them.. I must add that they have atrocious customer service if they did anything wrong, they never admit to any wrongdoing(unless sarcastically), as you will see for yourself with any negative review they have. Also, to the owner, I would like to add I did not keep changing my arrival time which you "apparently" remember from 2 years ago... I arrived in town before nightfall, before the time AGREED UPON, just to be asked inane questions before being hung up on, but you don't seem to remember that?... and 90% of my original post was not hearsay thank you very much, it was from my own horrible experience. Though good effort trying to mock the issues I have with your service. Any business that responds like "this" to their critiques, is disgusting, unprofessional, and should not be in operation. Don't Go. You've been warned.

Do not stay here. Aggressive host. BED BUGS! Bill, the host who lives upstairs with full access to the entire building, was lewd with some of the female 14 year old youth I was travelling with. He was racist towards the people of colour I was there with (for example, demanded to know where they were from. When one shared she was born in Canada he said he didn't believe her and demanded to know where she was born). He was drunk on our second night (slurring and mixing up words, walking unsteadily, and smelled of liquor) and became aggressive with the adults and youth in our group (it all started when he came into the common space where some of us were watching tv and playing cards and angrily said "who the hell are you people" and then demanded we turn off the tv and answer his questions because we were "staying in his home"). He became increasingly aggressive when one of the leaders asked him to calm down and not talk to the youth this way. Our entire group of 16 youth and 3 adults locked ourselves in a bedroom while we sorted out what to do. He sat outside the room and would not leave, stating that he wanted to look each of us in the eye. Late in the evening we were able to find a hotel that could accommodate us. When he realized we were leaving he began screaming at the 3 young female staff, demanding they come out of their room and face him and stating it was their fault we were leaving (they had been in bed the entire time before this). They also packed up and left due to his state, even though they were volunteer workers from Europe and had nowhere else to go. Shortly after leaving we found a bed bug on one of our jackets. One youth had some bed bug bites after sleeping there the first night. The hostel was very dirty and uncomfortable, even before the host was inappropriate and aggressive. I hope he gets the support he needs, but I would not recommend anyone stay here.
All the staff members were very friendly and made everything to make us feel like home. We did appreciate their kindness. We recommend this place. Thank a lot. :-)
I'm not really sure why I feel the need to post a review now because I stayed here a while ago. I was a sole female traveler arriving in Winnipeg to start school. I knew that I would be really tired after traveling for 24 hours so I booked a private room. I have done a lot of travel and stayed in some really shady places - this was one of the worst. The owner was pretty scary - he lived up on the top floor and would get really drunk at night and come down to my room 'to check to see if everything was ok'. He also insisted that I let him know when I was leaving and when I was coming back, I could never shake the feeling that someone had been in my room when I wasn't there. Mostly I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was always watching me. Stay away from this place. There are some hotels downtown and on the outskirts of the city. You are probably safer there.
The way backpacker hostels should be; cosy, friendly, relaxed. A charming old house with lots of character in a great Winnipeg location. All the comforts of home while travelling.
We recently encountered a serious safety concern while staying at the Guest House International (Backpackers Winnipeg). While a group of high school exchange students were staying at the hostel, the manager/owner, became extremely intoxicated. He was belligerent, lewd, yelling, very angry, inappropriate and being subtlety racist. As a result of the students' feeling increasingly unsafe as his inappropriate behaviour escalated as the evening wore on, we were forced to relocate to new accommodations in the middle of the night. The three foreign workers working there (young female backpackers from Europe) left at the same time as our students as they were also feeling unsafe.
A very friendly atmosphere in a hostel wich provides you with everything you need and is in walking distance of all Winnipeg highlights... I'll absolutely go back!
Dirty hostel in a dodgy area. I can not recommend this hostel. I had bedbugs after my first night there, the staff recommendet to park my car in an fenced area behind the hostel because there where some thefts in the last couple of days. Even the Tim Hortons close by had a security service. You could only use one of three bathrooms properly, the two bathrooms in the basement where not suited for proper use. There where no lockers for your belongings and you had no keys for the dorm. The front door was only locked at night. Sad thing is that this hostel is the only real option in Winnipeg.
