I was given the expected runaround for three days before I got to see someone. She was wearing a Tiffany ring and was clearly sceptical of my situation, but gave me an appointment for three weeks later. I was given the typical package of hoops to jump through, which I did and showed up ten minutes early, as advised. There was a security issue just after I arrived, a woman was irate and police were called. My appointment was pushed back by half an hour, but I was expecting that too. What I wasn’t prepared for was the way the worker (Laura or Lauren or Leanne or something like that) showed me zero empathy and was clearly shocked and confused by my circumstances. Due to her complete level of ignorance and inability to relate, she decided my case is “suspicious” and turned me away. I wasn’t actually expecting her to help, she is representative of a broken system after all. But I do expect to be treated with respect and basic human decency. And when dealing with professionals, one would think that excusing oneself when leaving the room ought to be common courtesy. She was unable to give even that much. To be fair, before I left, she did attempt to absolve herself by giving me a pamphlet for Alberta medical benefits and asked if I knew about the food bank (although she was quick to inform me that she was unable to give me a referral for a hamper.) Even with a child who was placed in my care without notice and with no support, I was unable to receive even one payment, on the grounds that if I had made it this long (my circumstances changed 5 months prior), I “must have it figured out.” (I quote her and the intake worker. I was told this by both.) Be prepared to wait, and to be treated with utter shock and dismay. And don’t expect help. That’s not what they do. A deeply disheartening and infuriating experience. I’d rather eat from a dumpster.

I attended an interview workshop there, Lynn was the individual coaching the workshop. She's super friendly and very knowledgeable about various career paths. She has an extensive network of professionals and was able to connect them with her students. The environment was also a perfect place to learn, large windows facing the indoor garden provided a serene scene for breaks and socializing.

Helpful people doing there best in this tough economic situation we are in. Its a struggle that we all face and our emotions can turn us to blame when we dont feel were are getting what we deserve. These folks are putting forth a solid effort to help, And I appreciate them.

The people I spoke to here were veary friendly and helpful. Im from Montreal where the employees at the welfare offices are rude and unfriendly. They are much nicer here in Calgary.

They want people on the streets so they dont have to do their jobs tax payers pay them to do.

The only people in "business" who are incapable of remembering names or numbers. They seem to completely forget about you the second you walk out the door.

Called heritage square branch at 3:40pm July 30. I discussed about my situation that I need help for the cost of daycare as I still can’t afford it after the child care subsidy. The lady who got my call asked who is my support worker. And I said I don’t have it. She said to me “then why are you calling!”. That is rude.

No book resources newer than about 2010. Staff not very friendly. Computers old but usually functioning. Fax machine and phones usable. It's a shame for a relatively well located center to be so lacking in usability to help people find work or other opportunities.
