The school has changed since I attended in the 1950's as we would expect. What has not changed is Lake Huron and its relentless assault on Old Lakeshore Road. Gone are the open areas that were reserved for the summer cabins long since replaced by the influx of urbanites from who knows where. Gone also is the Vandersteen farm where they grew marvelous apples, nor does the Moore farm exist where Chuck and I spent many a childhood moment on the ragged edge of delinquency. The fishing enterprise of the Gallie family is no more and a very special lady and childhood friend Betty Louise Gallie has recently left us. Many alumni from the period and a great teacher/principle and gentleman Mr. Lemoine have also departed this world. All that still remains of the old Brights Grove School is a location where childhood dreams were founded, some cut brutally short, and others that came to fruition thousands of miles and decades hence. As a previous student I still relive the memories with Cal Smuland, my current comrade in arms, and wonder how we managed to come this far. From a small schoolhouse with colored chalk on the board, to university, non stop travel spanning the globe, and finally to another small community where retirement allows the richness of reflection. I hope that this country school. long since reborn, still conjures up the dreams and aspirations that teased the best out of me!
